A new podcast series: ‘Exploring Catholic Social Teaching’ has beeen launched by Clifton Diocese. The series is written and presented by Clifton Diocese former Director of Schools and Colleges, Ian McNiff. A booklet to accompany the podcasts.
The series is an ideal starting point for individuals, groups and parishes to begin to look at the Church’s social doctrine.
Bishop Declan writes an introduction to the ‘Exploring Catholic Social Teaching’ booklet which you can download in the multimedia panel on the right. He says: “Our diocesan pastoral guidelines ‘Called to be a People of Hope’ challenge us to build our Catholic communities by deepening our prayer, enabling communion and strengthening us for mission. Our podcast series ‘Exploring Catholic Social Teaching’ and this accompanying booklet help us to engage and strengthen our understanding of mission.
“Recently as a diocese we have focused on deepening our prayer with the preparations for the introduction of the new translation of the Roman Missal. This reminded us that the Mass is the central prayer of the Church.
“Also a great deal of work went into the preparation of ‘Parishes in Communion for Mission’. This looked at the vision we have for our parishes and the communion of life that we are called to build.
“The booklet and the podcasts, ‘Exploring Catholic Social Teaching’, focus on the mission of the Church. As I said in ‘Called to be a People of Hope’: ‘We are the disciples for today. We are called to live the gospel and witness to the truth of God. Our communities are to be living signs of a people sent in God’s name to a broken world of which we are part, to bring healing and hope, reconciliation, justice and new life.’
“‘Exploring Catholic Social Teaching’ can be a starting point to discover our mission as Catholics. The Gospel needs to be lived in the reality of people’s lives so that it can transform us and enable us to live as a newly created people. The will be a valuable resource for our schools, colleges and parishes.
“I would like to thank all those who have helped in the production of ‘Exploring Catholic Social Teaching’ - in particular Ian McNiff our former Director of Schools and Colleges. I commend it to you as a way to live Gospel values more deeply.”
Our first podcast sees Ian talking about the themes of Catholic social teaching. You can listen to and download the podcast in the multimedia panel on the right.
In the first podcast on 8 January Ian talks about the principles of Catholic social teaching. The series will then continue each Saturday, exploring the dignity of the human person, community and the common good, rights and responsibilities, the preferential option for the poor, solidarity, dignity of work, and care for creation.
